The Salem Multicultural Institute (SMI) Executive Board is currently conducting a search for a full-time salaried Executive Director. SMI is a volunteer-centered organization that orchestrates the annual Salem World Beat Festival along with an exhibit gallery and performance and lecture series in support of our mission of promoting harmony and understanding through innovative, educational cultural programs. This recruitment is part of our long-range strategic plan to hire a highly-qualified leader who will administer our programs and operations.
The minimum requirements are:
- Master's Degree in business, humanities or equivalent experience
- Proven knowledge and experience working in/with nonprofit
organizations and on collaborative projects
- Proven management and leadership skills
- Proven interpersonal and communication skills
- Proven ability to manage a multitude of tasks/projects at one time
- Knowledge of and success in using fundraising methodology
- Working knowledge of database and spreadsheet programs
- Budget preparation and financial management skills
The annual salary is negotiable, depending on experience. SMI will contribute towards individual medical and dental coverage up to $300 per month. Compensation package includes generous paid flextime and 11 paid holidays.

Hours

Environment
- Mainly office with some lifting, carrying, bending, etc., especially during the festival, which is held outdoors, at times during extreme heat.
Job Responsibilities:
- Personnel Management: Responsible for maintaining and building on volunteer-based organizational structure including: supporting current leaders and recruiting, motivating, coaching, evaluating, training, and supervising new volunteer leaders, office management volunteers, and future full and part-time paid staff members in order to insure smooth operations of the World Beat Festival and all year-round programs (within budgetary constraints). Ensure that all aspects of personnel management meet all legal requirements. When paid staff is hired, administer payroll reporting.
- Financial Management: Responsible for developing and administering the annual budget as approved by the Board of Directors. Oversee the daily administration/distribution of funds to ensure accountability for the organization. This includes working to ensure long-term sustainability of programs through effective contract negotiation and management with business partners and in-kind donors: office lease, insurance, rental agreements, waiver forms, exhibitor and performer contracts, DSUSA, Marion County, and gate proceeds agreements, etc. Implement financial controls with SMI Board to ensure safekeeping of organizational income and proper checks and balances.
- Planning: Assist the Board in ongoing long-range planning for the Salem Multicultural Institute.
- Fundraising:
- Grant writing: Research and write grants with specific objectives developed through the staff, the board, or subcommittees. Recruit, assign, and coach staff or volunteers to assist in grant writing and research when appropriate. Submit grant reports in advance of deadlines.
- Corporate/Organizational Contributions: Solicit donations and corporate sponsorships to add to the income of the organization
- Annual campaign: Develop and work with the Board of Directors on the annual campaign
- Individual contributions: Solicit donations with the assistance of the Board of Directors
- Special Events: Work with the Board of Directors to assist with the planning and implementation of special events.
- Acknowledgments: Ensure appropriate acknowledgment (tax letters, thank you letters, phone calls, signage etc.) of all contributions to the organization.
- Board & Volunteer Support: Communicate with the Board of Directors through regular monthly meetings, annual meetings, committee meetings and individual meetings. Work with World Beat Steering Team to improve training, communication, recognition and succession planning for team leaders to ensure continued success of the organization. Work with the committees to implement committee goals. This support will include some typical office administrative duties (phones and data entry) with some support from office volunteers.
- Program Development: Oversee new program and exhibit development in accordance with the SMI Strategic Plan to meet the needs of the community, the school district, and our funders. Coordinate and seek approval from the Board for all major new initiatives.
- Partnerships: Represent the organization throughout the community and develop collaborative efforts by attending meetings and events, speaking in public, serving on committees of affinity organizations and being an "ambassador" for SMI and the ethnic communities of Oregon.
- Operations: Oversee all SMI events and exhibits to include visitor service, exhibit maintenance and safety, appearance, public relations, advertising, and hours of operation to ensure a positive visitor/participant experience.
- Professional Development: Attend training sessions for personal growth and for the benefit of the organization.
